Root & Ember – 3 Bruton Place

Originally a freehold corner property spanning approximately 1,650 sq. ft across four floors, 3 Bruton Place had long been home to Mr. Stanton’s barbershop, a local institution for more than 40 years. With its distinctive wedge-shaped footprint and curved Bath stone frontage, the building sits within Park Place, just moments from Queens Road in Clifton.

Following its sale at auction, new owners Jane and Freddie Jago set out to breathe new life into this characterful period property, creating Root & Ember, a luxury food emporium specialising in smoked and cured British produce.

The vision included a bespoke in-house smokery within the basement, a complete transformation of the ground-floor commercial space and the renovation of the two-bedroom maisonette above.

The project’s design and planning were developed by Moon Design, with The Build Bristol Group working closely with the designers and clients to translate those plans into the finished spaces.

Our team began work in January 2024, taking responsibility for the construction, refurbishment and delivery of this complex mixed-use project.

Working collaboratively with the project’s designers, we brought the agreed vision and specification to life while navigating the practical challenges that come with renovating a historic building and creating spaces with very different commercial and residential requirements.

The project required careful coordination across multiple trades and disciplines, from the sensitive refurbishment of existing architectural features to the installation of the infrastructure required for a specialist food retail environment and working smokery.

Key features included:

• Full commercial refurbishment and fit-out of the ground-floor retail space
• Basement conversion and construction work to accommodate the in-house smokery
• High-spec residential renovation of the maisonette, including the installation of the new kitchen, bathrooms and internal finishes
• Careful refurbishment and treatment of historic elements, including stonework and sash windows
• Coordination with the design team, clients and specialist contractors throughout the construction process
• Delivery of works required to meet relevant environmental health and safety requirements for the food production and retail spaces
• Full construction project management from commencement through to completion

Opening in September 2024, Root & Ember represents a successful collaboration between client, designer and contractor, giving a much-loved Clifton property an entirely new chapter.

The completed building brings together specialist commercial, food production and residential spaces within one historic property, while retaining the architectural character and heritage that made 3 Bruton Place so distinctive in the first place.
