Mixed-Use Heritage Transformation in the Heart of Clifton

A standout example of adaptive reuse and sensitive refurbishment, 3 Bruton Place embodies how tradition and innovation can harmoniously coexist. This complete renovation of a Victorian-era, mixed-use property saw the transformation of a once-iconic Clifton barbershop into a stunning new food and lifestyle destination, Root & Ember, with a beautifully updated residential maisonette above.

Project Overview

Originally a Freehold corner property spanning 1,650 sq. ft across four floors, 3 Bruton Place had long been home to Mr. Stanton’s barbershop, a local institution for over 40 years. With its distinctive wedge-shaped footprint and curved Bath stone frontage, the building sits within the elegant tranquillity of Park Place, just steps away from the bustle of Queens Road.

Following its sale at auction, new owners Jane and Freddie Jago envisioned breathing new life into this charming period property by establishing Root & Ember, a luxury food emporium specialising in smoked and cured British produce. Their plans included a bespoke in-house smokery in the basement and the full renovation of the upper two-bedroom maisonette.

The Build

Our team began work in January 2024, delivering a fully managed design-and-build service tailored to this building’s unique challenges. From restoring original features to integrating modern systems suitable for food production and retail, every element of the project was executed with care and technical precision.

Key features included:
  • Full commercial refurbishment of the ground floor retail space
  • Basement conversion to accommodate a functional smokery
  • High-spec residential renovation with new kitchen, bathrooms, and internal finishes
  • Sensitive treatment of historic elements including stonework and sash windows
  • All works completed to meet environmental health and safety standards for food handling

Outcome

Opening in September 2024, Root & Ember stands as a testament to thoughtful refurbishment, blending artisanal craft, architectural integrity, and a seamless fusion of residential and commercial design. The result is a space that feels both rooted in heritage and ready for a bold, modern chapter.
